Nobody likes to feel sluggish. That feeling of having zero energy or motivation is the worst, especially when you know you want to do things.
As men, we often go through phases of low energy, making us want to form an ass-dent in the couch. Long term fatigue – both physical and mental – can be a sign of serious health issues. There can be a number of causes of fatigue in men – so let’s take a look.
Testosterone and energy
As we age, our testosterone levels gradually decrease. Testosterone and energy are closely linked – with low T levels potentially killing your sex drive, increasing body fat and lowering your motivation levels. Plus, low testosterone can be the cause of sleep issues, such as insomnia.
We all know that testosterone is important. In our teens it truly is in full swing, helping us to grow body hair, build muscle mass and deepen our voices along the way. The symptoms of low testosterone can quickly result in chronic low energy, and mental and physical fatigue.
There are ways to boost your testosterone levels naturally, however. If you think your T levels have taken a nosedive, it could be worth a visit to your GP. Our product, TestoGen helps you raise your T levels 100% naturally and safely.

Thyroid problems
If you feel as though you have a loss of energy, it could be due to a thyroid problem. Hypothyroidism – or low levels of the thyroid hormone – can severely disrupt your energy levels. It could be due to an autoimmune disease, where your immune system attacks your thyroid.
While this type of problem is typically more common in women, it can occur in men too. Ignoring the symptoms early on can lead to more severe issues if ignored entirely.
But what are the symptoms of hypothyroidism?
- Feeling fatigued
- Sensitivity to cold
- Constipation
- Gaining weight
- Muscle aches
- Dry skin
- Thinning hair
- Depression
It has also been discovered that low levels of thyroid hormone can lead to low testosterone levels, so if left untreated, you may end up with low T. The two problems combined can cause a loss of energy and extreme fatigue in men.
However, an overactive thyroid – or hyperthyroidism – can also cause fatigue due to a racing heart, high blood pressure, sleep issues and an overtaxed system.
Sleep troubles
If you feel as though you have a loss of energy, it could be down to poor sleep. If you’re a bit of a night owl, or consistently mix up your body clock, skipping sleep or sleeping during the day can lead to fatigue.
There are also sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, which can prevent quality sleep. Sleep apnea disrupts your breathing during sleep, leading many to use machines to aid their sleeping. Another issue that can cause fatigue via poor sleep is restless leg syndrome.
Depression
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, six million men have depression each year. This psychological and physiological condition can affect anyone. Some symptoms of depression can include:
- Feeling sad, low, or hopeless
- Loss of interest
- Difficulty concentrating
- Sleep troubles
- Loss of energy
- Feeling fatigued
- Weight changes
- Feeling “slowed down”
Depression is a treatable condition, with medication and counselling both widely available. If left untreated, depression can potentially lead to self harm or even suicide. If you feel as though your feelings have been more than the odd low mood, speak to a trusted friend or family member before seeking help from a GP when you feel ready.
Iron deficiency
Although typically more common in men than women, low iron levels can be the cause of extreme fatigue in men. Those following a vegetarian or vegan diet may suffer from loss of energy due to a poorly balanced diet and lack of iron in their meals.

It can also occur if you frequently donate blood, or suffer from internal bleeding from, for example, the stomach or intestinal tract. Other forms of anaemia can occur if your body lacks in other vitamins, such as B12 or folate.
Depending on the cause, the symptoms of anaemia can vary:
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Shortness of breath
- Pale skin
- Extreme fatigue
- Tingling in the hands/feet
Deeper health issues
There are a number of causes of fatigue in men, some of which can stem from deeper health issues. The conditions that can cause fatigue include:
- Kidney failure
- Liver failure
- Cancer
- Heart disease
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Diabetes
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
If you have recently changed medications, or started a new one, there is a possibility it could be causing fatigue. Certain pain medications, heart medications and blood pressure drugs can have side effects – including loss of energy. You may also experience fatigue from excessive caffeine, alcohol abuse, drug abuse and the use of antihistamines and cough medications.
How can you increase energy?
If you’re feeling a loss of energy, it could be due to poor diet and lack of exercise. Although feeling fatigued won’t make you want to jump out of bed and head to the gym, getting your blood pumping can really boost your mood.
Don’t worry, exercise doesn’t have to be too excessive! A 30-minute walk at least 5 times a week can really help your energy levels. Although you may not feel eager, to begin with, regular exercise can actually decrease fatigue and improve your sleep.

As well as getting enough sleep and stretching those legs, diet is also important. A healthy and balanced diet can work wonders for your energy levels. Ensure you’re getting plenty of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and nuts/seeds into your meals. Try to avoid junk food or too much sugar, and opt for water instead.
Heavy junk food should be limited, along with processed foods such as candy and soda. These can actually drain your energy levels and lead to a crash after too much sugar or caffeine.
